Steve Corbett graduated from medical school at St Thomas’ Hospital, London, in 1990 where he also gained a degree in biochemistry. After his basic surgical training, he was awarded his Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) from the University of London in 2000.
It was during this time that he presented his research on fracture healing at international and national meetings, for which he was awarded several national awards. He has since published articles and chapters on basic sciences.
On completion of his orthopaedic training, Steve undertook a Travelling Orthopaedic Fellowship in upper limb surgery in France, where he developed a specialist interest in arthroscopic shoulder surgery. In 2003, he became a consultant orthopaedic surgeon in the NHS at London’s Guys and St Thomas’ Hospitals, specialising in the shoulder and elbow.
He regularly attends international and national meetings as a faculty member and teaches on elbow and shoulder surgery both here in the UK and abroad. His research interests include rotator cuff tears, ‘tennis elbow’, clavicle fractures, acromioclavicular joint injuries and shoulder dislocation. He is a member of the British Shoulder and Elbow Society Research Committee and is currently involved in several national research trials.
Steve writes and reviews extensively and he was previously the Critical Reviewer of upper limb content in Gray’s Anatomy and is now a reviewer for the Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery, Shoulder and Elbow and the Bone and Joint Journal. He has co-authored two medical textbooks, is now editor of a leading medical textbook and has appeared on several television programmes including BBC’s City Hospital programme discussing and demonstrating upper limb surgery. He is a member of the British Elbow and Shoulder Society, the British Orthopaedic Research Society and the British Orthopaedic Society.
A keen personal and professional interest in sport has led to Steve specialising in helping professional athletes return to top-level sport after sustaining upper limb injury. He works with cricketers at country and county level and men and women from a wide range of different sports, including rugby and athletics.
Steve is the Clinical Governance Lead for Fortius Clinic and, annually, performs approximately 500 shoulder and elbow operative procedures.
